AJ Asked For Feedback
On Gold Canyon Condos
Condo developer to speak at ADOBE
meeting this week
By Jill Jones
The News
APACHE JUNCTION- A Pinal
County request for feedback from
the Apache Junction City Planning
and Zoning Commission (AJ P&Z)
was addressed at the AJ P&Z
Work Session on Tuesday, January
9, 2007. The issue was regarding
a rezoning request for property
in Gold Canyon for the purpose of
developing 183 residential condominiums
and a 13,170 square foot
commercial center.
The commissioners were asked to
review the rezoning request and
provide recommendations to the
county regarding a 9.33-acre parcel
located at Kings Ranch Road
and Gold Canyon Drive in Gold
Canyon. This parcel is the first portion
of 60-acres of undeveloped
land holdings within the Gold Canyon
Golf Resort complex to be studied
for development.
The property, which sits on the
8th hole of the golf course, currently
has three zoning designations,
CB-1 (Local Business), CB-2
(General Business) and SR (Suburban
Ranch). The developer is requesting
the property be rezoned
to CR-5 Multi Family and CB-1,
which will allow for the development
of the condominiums and retail
center.
Of the 183 condo units planned, 18 are slated to be single bedroom
(1,002 square feet) units, 141 two
bedroom (1,254 square feet) and 24 three
bedroom (1,402 square feet) units, which
will include a mix of 2, 3 and 4 story
structures. The first level of the units
will serve as underground
parking facilities. The condo living
space will start at street level with
the parking facilities built into the
space provided by a drop in elevation,
away from the street.

domestic violence victim.
William P. Langan, 38, of Florence,
a detective in the domestic violence

one month pregnant at the time.

Habitat For Humanity
Launches Builders Blitz 07
Three homes built in Apache Junction in
one week
By Cindy McSperitt
The News
APACHE JUNCTION- The Habitat
for Humanity Valley of the Sun
Builders Blitz began bright and
early the morning of Monday, January
8, 2007. The goal was to build
three houses in one week at the
Habitat for Humanitys Ironwood
Trails subdivision in Apache Junction.
In recent times, it is the most
homes Habitat for Humanity has
built in one week said Missie
DAunoy, chief development officer
for Habitat for Humanity Valley
of the Sun.
Three local home builders joined
with Habitat for Humanity to build
the homes: Blanford Homes,
Camelot Homes and Morrison
Homes. Each builder was responsible
for building one of the homes
and the competition between them
is what was being called the
Builders Blitz.

A.J.
Wrestlers “Three-Peat” At McMinn
By Chuck Baker
The News
Oh, those tricky Prospector
wrestlers. When it comes to
the annual Glenn McMinn Tournament
you can never count
them out. A year ago, Apache
Junction needed some brilliant
coaching strategies and an improbable
victory from sophomore
Tim Harlan to come from
behind and defeat Gilbert Mesquite
38-37 in the team championship
finals to successfully
defend their team title. This past
weekend at Apache Junction
high School, it didn’t even look
like the Prospectors would make
it to the championship match.
After losing in their “pool play”
team duals to Higley, 36-26, on
Friday, when it came down to
the final pool play matches on
Saturday, the Prospectors
needed two things to happen to
return to the finals. First, they
needed Washington High
School to defeat Higley. And
second, Apache Junction had to
not only beat Avondale AguaFria but they
needed to score at
least 45 points in doing so.
No problem. With Washington winning the heavyweight match against
Higley, the Rams pulled out a 40-36 win
to keep A.J.’s chances alive. Then the
Prospectors defeated Agua Fria 49-21 for
the chance to three peat.
