Woman stopped and frisked by man posing
as officer

APACHE JUNCTION- Two men, driving a
marked vehicle and posing as Pinal
County
Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputies,
reportedly
pulled a woman over and one of them
searched her person or “frisked” her.
The victim, whose name is being
withheld,
drove to the Apache Junction Police
Department
(AJPD) to report the incident,
which occurred around 10:30 a.m. on
Monday,
January 29, 2007. PSCO met the woman
at the AJPD where she told them that she
had been stopped and frisked by two men
who had presented themselves as PCSO
deputies.
The victim said two men pulled her over
in
her car in the area of Southern Avenue
and
Crismon Road. She said the men were
wearing
some type of uniform and were driving
an older model tan vehicle with top
lights
and marked with the lettering “Pinal
County
Sheriff.”
She said the vehicle pulled up behind
her
and honked its horn. She told deputies
that
she initially ignored the honking, but
complied
when the driver continued to honk and
then motioned for her to pull over.

AJ Students Nominated
For National Scholarship Program
By Cindy McSperitt
The News
Kelsey Coleman and Emily
Donald, Apache Junction High
School seniors and members of the
Apache Junction High School National
Honor Society (NHS), have
been nominated to compete in the
National Honor Society scholarship
competition sponsored by the
National Association of Secondary
School Principals.
Marla Zimmerman, principal of
Apache Junction High School, announced
the nomination, which
places Coleman and Donald in the
national competition. As a new feature
for the 2007 program, special
recognition and additional awards
will be presented to state and regional
winners, along with the selection
of one national recipient
who will receive a $13,000 college
scholarship.
“Kelsey and Emily are outstanding
choices to represent our school
in this competition,” said Chris
Brock, National Honor Society adviser.
“As a high school educator,
the public often asks me what it’s like
to work with all of those ‘awful’
teenagers. What they don’t realize
is they never hear about the really
great students who not only excel
academically, but also help others.
Kelsey and Emily, and many others
in NHS, not only make our
school better, they make our community
better by their service.”

Habitat for Humanity plans to build six
more AJ homes this year

APACHE JUNCTION- Pam
Reagor stood on a cement slab,
surrounded
by smiling strangers, saw
horses and two-by-fours, with tears
in her eyes.
She has lived in Apache Junction
for seven years. On Saturday, January
27, 2007, at a ground breaking
and dedication ceremony, she
stood on the sight of her home for
the first time.
Reagor filled out an application
for a house in December 2006
through Habitat for Humanity, Valley
of the Sun, a local chapter of
the nonprofit organization that recently
began building in Apache
Junction. Last Monday, she
learned that she and her two boys,
Ryan and Alan, were approved for
a home of their own.
“Everybody is going to get their
own bedroom,” a teary-eyed
Reagor said at the ground breaking
ceremony.

Lady Prospectors Tie
For Region Basketball Title
A.J.,
Tempe and Queen Creek all finish 7-3;
region tournament begins Tuesday with
Queen Creek hosting AJHS at 7:00 p.m.
By Chuck Baker
The News
Following the final week of the
regular season, the Lady Prospector
varsity basketball team
was one of three teams to tie
atop the East Sky Region standings
with identical 7-3 records.
The other two are Tempe and
Queen Creek. It marks the first
time in AJHS school history
that a girls basketball team has
either won outright or shared a
region, conference or division
title.
After dropping a three-point
decision to Queen Creek at
home this past Tuesday, Apache
Junction earned their share of
the region title with a 55-49 win
at home over Tempe on Friday
as sophomore Hannah Herrera
poured in 25 points, grabbed 10
rebounds and blocked six shots.
The game went back and forth
throughout the first three periods
and behind Herrera and junior
Chelsea Darling, who scored
eight of her 10 points in the final
quarter, Apache Junction
pulled away for a huge victory.
Herrera and Darling, the fourth
quarter heroes, had plenty of help from
their teammates in the
win. Senior Jessica Samuels
scored 9 points to go with four
rebounds and two assists, senior
Jez Wells added 6 points
and dished out nine assists, junior
Rachel Marquez tallied 3
points and had four rebounds,
and senior Megan Mullender
added a bucket and pulled down
eight rebounds.
