GOLD CANYON- Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents raided a Gold Canyon home in the 7300 block of S. San Cristobal Way in the early morning hours of April 25, 2007, recovering more than 220 weapons from a suspected illegal gun dealer.
ATF agents secured a federal search warrant on April 20, 2007 for the home of Mesa Police Department Civilian Officer Larry Cheatham, 56, following an undercover investigation during which agents reportedly purchased weapons from Cheatham, a 25- year veteran of the Mesa Police Department who worked in traffic investigations and property recovery, and is now facing charges of violating Federal Fire Arms Laws.

City Annexes 2.5 Acres
PD receives kudos at ‘Call To the Public’
By Jill Jones
The News

APACHE JUNCTION- Prior to approving the annexation of 2.5 acres into the city limits, Mayor Douglas Coleman asked Apache Junction Police Department (AJPD) Sgt. Garret Elkins, who will be retiring after 20 years, to lead the Pledge of Allegiance to open the May 1, 2007 council meeting. Elkins received a round of applause in appreciation for his service to the city.
A request by Desert Mesa Holdings for annexation of approximately 2.5 acres of land at the southwest corner of Cactus Rd. and 36th Avenue was unanimously approved. The property owner is in the process of constructing a new office building on the site and requested the annexation for connection to the city’s sewer system.
Council unanimously approved the Consent Agenda which included the awarding of bids to Hawker and Evans Asphalt Company for approximately 140,000 gallons of chip seal emulsion at $1.99 per gallon, to Mesa Materials for approximately 4,000 tons of precoated chips at $45.50 per ton, to City Wide Contracting for drainage improvements at Southern Ave. and Winchester Rd. for $13,830 plus 10 percent and the rejection of a single bid by Jillotti Electric Service Company for traffic signal maintenance services on the grounds that the bid was not submitted in accordance with requirements and also for insufficient funding budgeted.
Also approved as part of the Consent Agenda were purchases and contracts for the Library Expansion Project including $239,343.51 with Network Infrastructure Corp, $85,151.75 to Goodman’s, $133,919.53 to Arizona School Furnishings and $110,178.49 to 3M Corporation.

AJHS Lands 2 Region Track Champs
Robinson wins girls shot put with record throw; McCullen ties for 1st in 100 meter dash
By Chuck Baker
The News

Two Apache Junction High School athletes were crowned East Sky Region track and field champions at last week’s meet held at Queen Creek High School. Senior Diamin Robinson took first place in the girls shot put event breaking her own school record with a winning toss of thirty-five feet. Sophomore Shane McCullen tied for first place in the 100 meter dash finals with his time of 11:42.
A couple of weeks ago at the Lost Dutchman Invitational, Robinson set a new AJHS record in girls shot put with a throw of 32 feet and four inches, breaking the old mark set back in 1994 by Patricia Desmarias. This past Friday at Queen Creek, Robinson shattered that mark with her throw of 35 feet on her seventh and final toss. McCullen and Phoenix Arcadia’s Chip Sivak, two of the top running backs in football this past season, shared first place in the 100 meter finals on Friday after track officials viewed replays of the race on videotape.
McCullen, who was also nursing a minor turf toe injury, added a second place finish in the finals of the 200 meters, anchored the AJHS boys 4x100 meter relay team which finished third with a combined time of 44:77, and placed fourth overall in long jump with a leap of 20-05. Because the top three finishers at the East Sky Region Meet all qualify for this week’s 4A-II State Championships, McCullen will represent AJHS at State in the 100 and 200 meters and in the 4x100 relay.
