Elkins, who will be retiring after
20 years, to lead the Pledge of
Allegiance
to open the May 1, 2007
council meeting. Elkins received a
round of applause in appreciation
for his service to the city.
A request by Desert Mesa Holdings
for annexation of approximately
2.5 acres of land at the southwest
corner of Cactus Rd. and 36th

AJHS Lands 2 Region
Track Champs
Robinson wins girls shot put with record
throw; McCullen ties for 1st in 100
meter dash
By Chuck Baker
The News
Two Apache Junction High
School athletes were crowned
East Sky Region track and field
champions at last week’s meet
held at Queen Creek High
School. Senior Diamin
Robinson took first place in the
girls shot put event breaking her
own school record with a winning
toss of thirty-five feet.
Sophomore Shane McCullen
tied for first place in the 100
meter dash finals with his time
of 11:42.
A couple of weeks ago at the
Lost Dutchman Invitational,
Robinson set a new AJHS
record in girls shot put with a
throw of 32 feet and four
inches, breaking the old mark
set back in 1994 by Patricia Desmarias. This past Friday at
Queen Creek, Robinson shattered
that mark with her throw
of 35 feet on her seventh and
final toss. McCullen and Phoenix
Arcadia’s Chip Sivak, two of the
top running backs in football this
past season, shared first place
in the 100 meter finals on Friday
after track officials viewed
replays of the race on videotape.
McCullen, who was also nursing
a minor turf toe injury, added
a second place finish in the finals
of the 200 meters, anchored the AJHS
boys 4x100 meter relay
team which finished third
with a combined time of 44:77,
and placed fourth overall in long
jump with a leap of 20-05. Because
the top three finishers at
the East Sky Region Meet all
qualify for this week’s 4A-II
State Championships, McCullen
will represent AJHS at State in
the 100 and 200 meters and in
the 4x100 relay.
