‘Bobby’ Is Back Home!
Stolen dog & owner reunited after 2 months, 1,800 miles

APACHE JUNCTION- Bobby was
“homeward bound” Wednesday
evening, June 6, 2007 as he landed
safe and sound at the Continental
Airlines Cargo area of Sky Harbor
Airport and into the arms of tearful
owner Lillian Brown. The 9:45 p.m.
reunion was captured by camera
crews from six different Valley television
stations.

The little Terrier/Beagle mix dog
had not seen Brown since being
stolen from her home in Apache
Junction on April 2. Bobby was recovered
in Fort Wayne, Indiana on
June 2, two months from the date
of his disappearance. The reunion
was possible thanks to the coordinated
efforts of the Apache Junction
and Fort Wayne Police Departments,
Fort Wayne Animal Care and
Control (FWACC), Continental Airlines,
the Apache Junction/Gold
Canyon News and Apache Junction
Animal Control (AJAC).

A winter visitor neighbor of
Brown’s admitted to Fort Wayne
police that she had stolen the dog
and taken him back to her home in
Fort Wayne. The woman faces no
charges in Indiana, but a warrant
has been issued for her arrest
should she return to Arizona.




New City Council Seated
Former Mayor Douglas Coleman bids tearful farewell

APACHE JUNCTION- Mayor Douglas
Coleman bid an emotional farewell as he vacated
his mayoral seat after 12-years in office.
He officially turned over the reigns to incoming Mayor Johnny Insalaco at the June
5, 2007 city council meeting.

Before stepping down, Coleman presented
outgoing Councilmen Kris Sippel and Dave Waldron with plaques in recognition
of their service. Waldron was
not present to accept his award due
to extensive dental work done earlier
in the day. However, he sent a
message that was read by friend
Dan Austin in which he vowed, “I’ll
be back.”

Sippel expressed appreciation for
the friendship and leadership he experienced
with Coleman and
thanked the current council, staff
and his family for their support. He
said he is not giving up a dream but
will instead be living another one
and is looking forward to spending
Monday and Tuesday evenings
with his family.



Essay Propels Student To State Competition
‘Jamestown Colonies’ essay chosen for DAR State Competition

has been notified
that her essay
on
“Jamestown
Colonies” has
been selected for
consideration in
a statewide competition
sponsored
by the
Daughters of the
American Revolution
(DAR).
Winners will advance
to the national
level.

The DAR is a
v o l u n t e e r
women’s service
organization
dedicated to promoting
patriotism, preserving
American history, and securing
America’s future through better
education for children. The organization
was founded in 1890 and is
headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Rebecca is the daughter of Todd
and Teresa Sanders of Apache
Junction. She will be entering
Apache Junction High School this
August as a freshman.





Summer Softball Combines Young And Old
As many incoming freshmen players as returning seniors-to-be make up Lady Prospectors Summer roster

Fielding a team with experienced
seniors-to-be mixed with
equal numbers of incoming
freshmen players, the Lady
Prospector Summer softball
team took to the field last Tuesday
in a doubleheader played at
Kiwanis Park in Tempe. After
tying Tempe Marcos De Niza
4-4 in their first game, Apache
Junction jumped out to a 9-2
lead over Phoenix Mountain
Pointe in the nightcap and held
on for a 10-8 victory.

The Lady Prospectors are
competing in the Tempe Summer
League once again, which
kicked off last Tuesday and
runs through June with post
league playoffs slated for June
28 for the top four teams based
on won-loss records. High
schools competing in the Summer
league, while they all want
to win, are also using this opportunity
to showcase some of
their younger talent as evidenced
by the nine incoming freshmen
players on the AJHS roster.

In their first game with Marcos
De Niza, Apache Junction held
a 4-1 lead with senior-to-be
pitcher Terra Ciesielski tossing
a no-hitter through the first five
innings. But two base hits
coupled with two walks allowed
Marcos De Niza to score
three runs in the last half of the
sixth inning, officially ending the
game in a 4-4 tie.
