After a loss to El Mirage Dysart on Jan. 8, Apache Junction hit the road and bounced back with a 50-43 4A Black Canyon Region boys basketball win at Glendale.
The Prospectors improved to 4-10 overall, 1-2 in the region, and have won three of their last five games.
“The holiday tournament (in Casa Grande) was really good for us,” Prospectors Coach Cornelius Turner said. “I felt like our effort and attitude throughout the game (against Dysart) was positive,” Turner said. “The boys didn’t get down and that gave us an opportunity to actually win the game.”
Jimari Grayson was the top scorer for AJHS with 13 points, and Nick Moorhead added 11. The Demons (13-5, 3-0) were led by Nathanial Pickens with 13 points, followed by Daryian Mathews with 12, and Riley Fornerette with 11.
“I told the kids that to hold a team like Dysart that scores in the 60s and 70s a lot, and to hold them to 44 was an accomplishment,” Turner said.
“I thought we executed exactly what we wanted to do defensively. The ball didn’t bounce our way on the offensive end, but we’ll keep working.”
