Girls Basketball Wins League Title; Football Places 2nd
The Cactus Canyon Jr. High girls basketball team won the Middle School League championship on Monday, March 4, defeating J.O. Combs, finishing its season undefeated in 10 games.
Eighth-grader Alyssa Demery averaged 12.5 points per game for the Cougars. In a game against Combs, seventh grader Alexis Alsenay made seven 3-pointers to lead CCJH to a victory.
The Cougars averaged 35 points per game and held their opponents to an average of 16 points per game.
Players on the team are: Skylar Brindle, Alexis Alsenay, Allie Pride, Olivia Scalmato, Skyllar Burnham, Brooklyn Neace, Alyssa Demery, Jolie Wyatt, Susana Martinez, Sophia Tolentino, and Ciara Anderson.

Dawson Smith’s 3-yard touchdown run with 3:45 remaining in the fourth quarter provided the margin of victory for Ben Franklin Jr. High on Wednesday, March 6, as the Chargers held on to defeat Cactus Canyon 24-20 at Davis Field for the Middle School League football championship.
Cougars Coach Vance Miller said he learned on game day that two of his offensive linemen would not be available.
“We wound up having to draw up a new game plan on the fly, with a whole new left side of the line,” Miller said. “It just wasn’t in the cards for us. But the kids fought hard.”
Smith’s touchdown was his second of the game; he also scored from 30 yards out. Austin Wyler threw a scoring pass to Chris Mase, and Ty Lilly returned a kickoff 85 yards for the Chargers’ first score.
Cougars quarterback Gavin Limongello ran for two CCJH touchdowns, a 2-point conversion, and threw a touchdown pass to Nathan Acosta.
Cactus Canyon finished its season 4-2.
