Many of us know about The Nature Conservancy (TNC), but may be less aware of what it does in Arizona and in Pinal County. Bob Rogers and Nicole Hill, both managers with TNC Arizona, will describe some of TNC’s continuing work in the San Pedro Watershed during the February 13th SALT Speakers Series.
The series is organized by the Superstition Area Land Trust (SALT) and co-sponsored by the Apache Junction Parks & Recreation Department. The talks are held at the Multi-Generational Center, Rm. B-118, 1035 N. Idaho Rd., Apache Junction, starting at 6:30 p.m., generally on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, October through April.
Rogers currently serves as the Conservancy’s Stewardship Director, managing all the preserves and land management projects in the San Pedro Watershed. After nearly 25 years with the Conservancy, Bob has seen much of that work mature and transition from simply managing sites to leveraging conservation at a watershed and landscape scale.
Bob is a native Arizonan, born in Morenci and raised on the family ranch in Altar Valley, near Tucson. Bob studied Ranch Management in college in Wyoming, then spent 5 years working on his family’s farms and ranches in Arizona and Colorado, then tried his hand as a farrier, specializing in shoeing performance horses. Longing to return to the wild places, he came to work for The Nature Conservancy at Muleshoe Ranch near Willcox in 1994. He has managed the fire programs in Arizona and New Mexico for TNC and worked to recover native fish and several listed species across SE Arizona.
Nicole joined The Nature Conservancy in 2017 as Arizona’s Deserts and Grasslands Program Manager. Nicole did her undergraduate work in Natural Resource Management at Ball State University in Indiana and her graduate work at Clemson University in City and Regional Planning. She has 18 years of experience in conservation real estate, fundraising and program management, with knowledge of local government administration, financing and public policy making. Nicole served six years as an elected city councilmember in Tumwater, WA, before relocating to Phoenix to join TNC. Nicole and her husband reside in north Phoenix with their two dogs.
