Police have arrested a driver who is charged with causing a fatal accident in Apache Junction last December.
In a statement from the Apache Junction Police Department, officials say that Cindy Fite (47) was arrested on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at her home in the 8500 East block of Southern Ave. in Mesa.
The arrest warrant charges her with Manslaughter (as a direct result of the accident), Aggravated Assault, Use/Possession of a Narcotic Drug and multiple traffic violations. Fite was transported to the Pinal County Detention Center in Florence where she is currently detained on a $250,000 bond.
According to the AJPD release: “On Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at approximately [9:15 p.m.], the Apache Junction Police Department was dispatched to the intersection of Superstition Blvd and Delaware Drive, Apache Junction [for] an injury traffic accident. Initial reports indicated at least one occupant had been ejected.
“Upon the arrival of the first officers, it was quickly determined two occupants of a white Toyota Avalon were deceased. The male driver, identified as Richard Edstrom, and the front passenger, identified as Maurine Edstrom, were both pronounced dead by Superstition Fire & Medical District. The rear passenger on the passenger side of the vehicle, identified as Alice Larson, was extricated, treated at the scene, and transported to Banner Desert Hospital where she later expired.
“The driver of the blue Chevrolet Suburban, identified as Cindy Fite, was ejected from the vehicle and transported to Banner Desert Hospital.
“Officers responded to the hospital based on the suspicion of driving under the influence of a dangerous drug. Officers obtained a search warrant and collected a blood sample from Fite. Based on the severity of the collision and the pending charges, [Arizona Department of Public Safety] DPS was requested to assist in the investigation. DPS Vehicular Collision Unit responded to the scene.
