Gilgert, Preuhs in 4A/5A Softball All-Star Game

Seniors Mikayla Gilgert and Denae Preuhs represented Apache Junction in the 4A/5A Arizona Softball Coaches Association All-Star Game, played on June 6 at Scottsdale Community College.

Gilgert and Preuhs played on the Blue team, which defeated the Red 12-10.

Gilgert was the starting pitcher for the Blue team, gave up three runs and struck out two. Preuhs picked up the Blue team’s first hit and scored their first run.

“Denae played some great defense,” AJHS Coach Ed Matlosz said. “Mouse also played right field and second base. She had two hard-hit balls that were caught.”

Gilbert Williams Field outfielder Natalie Castro was selected as the game’s most valuable player. Castro was 2-for-2, walked twice, scored four runs, stole three bases and added a run batted in for the Red team.


Coach Ed Matlosz reports that Apache Junction is 5-1 in the Tempe Prep Summer Softball League. AJ has defeated Mesa Mountain View (8-3), Scottsdale Desert Mountain (9-5), Tempe Marcos de Niza (17-1) and knocked off Phoenix Arcadia twice (12-11, 11-7).

Team members are Emily Lecher, Esther Nieman, Tristan Greer, Elexis Toro, MacKenzie Dillon, Daisy Ruelas-Estrada, Megan Clark, Kaidance Cleland, Ainsley Pape, Megan Wagner, Makayla Henwood and Liz Cardenas.

Incoming freshmen on the squad include Kaylee Wagner, Liberty Henwood, Heather Quick, Addison Cooksey, Danielle Ruiz, and Shantel Ortiz; and incoming eighth-grader Savannah Eagley.

Assistant coaches are Hank Duffy and Nathan Greer.

“The girls are working hard,” Matlosz said.
