Lost Dutchman Marathon Awards AJ Community Youth $70,000

The Lost Dutchman Marathon Committee held their 2019 Awards Banquet with check presentations on April 25 at The Paseo in Apache Junction. $70,000 was awarded to more than 20 various local individuals and community youth groups.

The 19th Annual Lost Dutchman Marathon was held in February, with the event running from Gold Canyon to Apache Junction. Located at the base of Superstition Mountain, the Lost Dutchman Marathon follows a scenic, rolling, point-to-point, nationally certified course that can be used as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. The event is a favorite of serious marathoners and casual runners alike.

The marathon has consistently raised $50,000 and more for the youth of our community in the past several years.

The Lost Dutchman Marathon Board and working Committee includes Kristie Falb (President), Larry Wharton (Race Director and Vice President), Jodi Erlich (Treasurer), Sara Feraldi (Secretary), Rick Hardina, Dennis Lusk, Doug Coleman, Melissa Hopkins, Bob Benjamin, Grady McEachern, Terry Barwick, Sarah Stone, Jamie Zacher, Melissa Drake, Chris Giles, Gary Nine, Nancy Roskos, Tayna Loftis, Liz Langenbach, Jeff Kopp, Suzanne Daniels, James Wasson, Rocc Wilson, Martin Loftus and Darch Oborne

The event’s founding organizations are the city of Apache Junction, Pinal County and the Apache Junction Unified School District.

The distribution for 2019 was: Apache Junction High School Scholarships $15,000; Apache Junction High School Track and Cross Country Pay to Play – $11,000; city of Apache Junction Parks and Recreation Youth Scholarship Fund – $20,000; Apache Junction High School Football – $1,500; Apache Junction High Junior ROTC – $1,500; Apache Junction Police Dept. Auxiliary – $1,500; Superstition Mtn. Rotary Youth Fund – $3,500; Girl Scout Troop 216 – $1,500; Apache Junction Little League – $1,500; Pinal County Girls on the Run – $1,500; Apache Junction Police Dept Explorers – $1,500; Superstition Fire & Med Explorers $1,500; Black & Gold Youth Football – $1,500; Apache Junction High School Band $1,500; Skyline Jr. ROTC -$1,500; Superstition Mountain Soccer Club – $1,500; Apche Junction Boys Basketball – $1,000; Girl Scout Troop 2294 – $1,000; Apache Junction High School Volleyball – $1,000; Apache Junction High School Girls Basketball – $500; and Imagine Prep Booster – $500

The Lost Dutchman Marathon, Inc. is a public charity run by an all-volunteer board of directors and officers, with proceeds directed to local youth organizations focused on the economically disadvantaged.

Race Director Larry Wharton emphasized that the marathon races are not just about sports—they are about supporting our local community. He thanked the community for their tremendous support.
