2 dead, 5 injured in crash with wrong-way driver on I-40
A collision with a wrong-way driver on I-40 outside of Holbrook last weekend has left 2 dead and 5 injured.
A van carrying members of New Season Christian Fellowship church in Apache Junction was returning from a youth camp when they were struck at around 4 p.m. The driver of the van, Kayleen Candelaria, was killed and the other injured were passengers in the van. The wrong-way driver was also killed in the crash.
According the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), the wrong-way car was driving at a high speed when it struck the van near the Hopi Travel Plaza.
Following the impact, DPS said the wrong-way car burst into flames.
In a post made to the Facebook page of New Season Christian Fellowship church, the other injured were listed as “young ladies” who were sent to a medical facility in Winslow. It said they were admitted with multiple injuries including broken bones, internal spleen bleeding and a brain bleed.
