SAN TAN VALLEY – Apache Junction, behind the offensive punch from its version of “the Splash Brothers,” put a positive wrap on its boys basketball season with a 65-57 Black Canyon Region victory over Combs on Feb. 1.
Trevor Bayer led the Prospectors (9-18 overall, 5-5 region) with 20 points, followed by Evan Quiroz with 16 and Brigham Milkey with 15.
“Combs came to play on their Senior Night,” Prospectors Coach Scott Stansberry said. “I was really happy with the boys keeping their composure because the calls were really inconsistent.
“After the disappointing season we had and the way the game was officiated, I was super proud of them to overcome all of that and end the season with a win.
“Overall, it was disappointing, we underperformed, and unacceptable in my eyes. I have to be better, and I’m going to be this offseason.”
In their senior seasons, Quiroz finished with 76 3-pointers and Bauer wound up with 69. In Quiroz’s varsity career, the guard ended up with 195 3-pointers while scoring 1,308 points.
Looking ahead, Stansberry admits it will be tough to lose the top two 3-point shooters in 4A.
“It’ll be a different look,” he said. “We’ll be grinding it out. We have a lot of these kids back, and the future is looking good.”
