Repeat Selections for Quiroz, McMinn and Rutkowski
The AIA recently announced its all-state teams for the 2017-18 winter sports season, and three Apache Junction athletes were among the honorees.
Evan Quiroz was named to the all-4A boys basketball second team, and Lady Prospectors Emily Rutkowski and Mattie McMinn were selected to the all-4A girls soccer second team.
Earlier, Quiroz was named as Black Canyon Region player of the year, and repeated as the region’s offensive player of the year.
Quiroz drained 76 3-pointers (35 percent) in his senior season and wound up with 195 for his career, along with 1,308 career points. In the 2017-18 season, he scored 489 points (18.1 per game), sank 89 of 115 free throws (77 percent), and averaged 3.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals per game.
As a junior, Quiroz was third in 4A scoring, ninth in the state, at 24.2 points per game. He was also named to the all-Black Canyon Region first team.
McMinn, a senior midfielder, was also selected to the 4A second team as a junior, when she led the Lady Prospectors with 17 assists along with five goals. As a senior, McMinn scored eight goals and collected 11 assists.
Rutkowski, a junior midfielder, scored 10 goals along with nine assists. She was a second-team all-region choice as a sophomore (17 goals, six assists) and tied for Section 5 player of the year as a freshman, when she scored 18 goals with 11 assists.
