Three AJHS Prospectors were named to the 4A All-Black Canyon Region first-team – pitcher Austin Sample, first baseman Nathan Rhodes and centerfielder Nick Mohn.

Pitcher Remy Wiltz and catcher JJ Bradley were named to the all-region second team. Selections were made in a vote of the region coaches.

“It was nice to see this recognition for our kids, who were pretty solid for us all season,” Prospectors Coach Alex Murphy said.

Sample, a junior pitcher-infielder, was 3-2 with a 2.94 ERA. He struck out 35 and walked 13 in 35 2/3 innings, holding opponents to a .247 average.

At the plate, Sample – a second-team choice last season – hit .386 with 18 runs batted in, eight doubles, four triples and one home run.

Rhodes, a left-handed hitting senior, hit three home runs, drove in 32 runs and batted .435, along with a .543 on-base percentage and a .739 slugging percentage. A repeat selection from 2017, Rhodes was also 3-2 on the mound with a 3.36 ERA.

“Austin was a great contributor to our success, both pitching and at the plate,” Murphy said. “Nathan is looking at options to continue playing baseball. He’ll find somewhere to go. He’s a good ballplayer.”

Mohn, who missed all of 2017 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, came back as a senior to hit .425, scored 36 runs, stole 20 bases, drove in 15 runs and had a .531 OBP. The senior right-hander signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Benedictine-Mesa.

“Unfortunately, Nick couldn’t pitch very much for us, be I think he can come back 100 percent and compete right off the bat for a pitching spot with Benedictine,” Murphy said.

Wiltz, a sophomore pitcher, was 1-0 with a 2.80 ERA; as a hitter, he hit one home run with 17 RBIs and a .471 OBP.

Bradley, a sophomore, batted .273 with a .455 OBP, a home run, and 22 runs batted in.

“Remy hit pretty well overall, but tailed off a little bit toward the end,” Murphy said. “JJ hit well and played good defense for us. He’s still learning about calling a game, but he made excellent progress and we see him back behind the plate next season.”
