Salt River Sites Close Temporarily

Granite Reef, Phon D. Sutton, Goldfield & Butcher Jones affected

Granite Reef and Phon D. Sutton day-use recreation sites along the Lower Salt River will be impacted by paving work being done on Bush Highway. Expect access restrictions into Granite Reef, between February 1 and March 5, 2018, while Maricopa County Department of Transportation completes improvements to Bush Highway. This construction work will also make Phon D. Sutton inaccessible by vehicle at intermittent times during project work. Forest visitors will be able to hike or float through the area, but will need to make other arrangements on where to be picked up during this construction period. Additional information can be found here.

People driving or visiting the area should expect delays between Power Road and mile post 26, while Maricopa County Department of Transportation is working to improve safety for the public in the area. Additional information about the Bush Highway road project can be found here.

The Tonto National Forest will also be completing paving work at Goldfield and Butcher Jones Recreation sites causing additional temporary closures. Goldfield will be closed to public entry from February 14 through March 13, 2018, while this work is completed. Paving work will also occur at Butcher Jones beginning on February 20, 2018. Butcher Jones will remain open for the majority of the project work, but will be closed to the public on March 7 – 9, 2018. During these temporary closures, both vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be prohibited.
