Strong Start for AJHS

Lady Prospectors on 3-Game Win Streak

After opening the season with a steady diet of 5A-6A opponents in the Dobson/Westwood Tournament in Mesa, Apache Junction built a three-game winning streak over the last week with two victories over Tempe Marcos de Niza and a rout of Gilbert Higley.

The Lady Prospectors completed play in the Dobson/Westwood tourney with a 15-3 win over Marcos de Niza on Feb. 24. AJ built an 11-3 lead after three innings.

Denae Preuhs, Daisy Ruelas-Estrada, Cori Haro and Priscilla Saldate each drove in two runs, Preuhs, Saldate and Mikayla Gilgert each had two hits; Preuhs collected a double, triple and sacrifice fly. Tristen Greer and Elexis Toro each stole two bases.

Toro was the starting pitcher, striking out three with one walk and three earned runs.


Freshman Daisy Ruelas-Estrada had a big day at the plate for AJ, going 2 for 4 with two runs scored and four runs batted in, as the Lady Prospectors downed Higley 14-0 in six innings.

Mikayla Gilgert tossed a four-hit shutout, with nine strikeouts. She was also 4 for 5 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Cori Haro was 4 for 5 with a run and two RBIs. Tristin Greer drove in a pair of runs while going 3 for 5.


Cori Haro drove in four of AJ’s 10 runs as the Lady Prospectors won 10-4 in Tempe. Tristin Greer and Mikayla Gilgert – who homered and doubled – each had two RBIs, and Elexis Toro was 4 for 5 with a double and two runs.

Gilgert struck out 11, walked one, and gave up three earned runs on nine hits, improving to 3-2 on the season.


The Lady Prospectors (4-4 overall) are at home Monday against Phoenix Metro Tech, with road games at Goodyear Estrella Foothills on Tuesday and a Thursday game at Buckeye Youngker before spring break.
